Yoga Mama

We are super happy to announce the addition of a new class!

Yoga Mama starts 11.3.2011

Classes will be held Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:45

Description of the class:

Designed to nourish the body and soul during pregnancy, expectant mothers will use the principles of mind/body awareness to gain physical and mental strength to help you on your journey.  Prenatal yoga can help relieve stress and physical discomfort, improve circulation, aid in digestion and create an overall feeling of well being.  You will also find a warm supportive space to connect with other expectant moms.  Please note, expecting moms can also drop into our deep stretch class or yoga basics and find support and relaxation as well!  If you are interested in exploring other classes, we do recommend taking a Yoga Mama class first to learn appropriate modifications during pregnancy.  (All levels)

Blissed Out

I had a amazing weekend with Wade Imre Morissette and am very grateful that so many people from the Anchorage “Yoga” community joined me. We kicked off Friday night with a little Hip/ Hop flow fused with Wades inspirational teaching and transformational singing voice. By the end of class I could feel bliss begin to bubble to the surface of my skin. Saturday brought Sun Salutations, a bounty of shishsana (headstands) and Wades tangible approach to the vayus and koshas. With ever softening breath I begin to feel my subtle body awakening. Had I not  begun to open I doubt I would of been able to access those dynamic backbends later in class with the same awareness.
The highlight of the weekend for me had to be Saturday evening Kirtan. The energy from everyone chanting was so electric and healing. What a vibrant experience to share with everybody I love... my partner, my children, and my yoga family.  By Sunday I admit I was a little sore yet my mind and spirt craved more. Wade gave me the greatest gift with this class, the opportunity to let loose, let go and dance...dance...dance. That is when it happened...the layers of tension, stress melted away and my empty cup was full again. Joy replaced pain and my inner child came out to play. I was blissed out of my mind!

5 Biggest Reasons People FAIL to
Achieve Their Health, Fitness and Lifestyle Goals

Remember way back in January when everyone was making New Year’s Resolutions? January is a time when millions flock to the gym, go on a diet, or join a weight loss center; when everyone resolves to get healthier in the upcoming year.  According to research, however, less than 20% achieve their goals, on average, and the biggest failures are often fitness- and health-related.

“Many people start each New Year with goals to improve their health and fitness and begin new exercise programs.  Yet after investing time and money, most fail to get any traction and achieve significant long term results,” explains Ginny Grupp, owner, of AlaskaFit, LLC, a certified fitness professional with over 6 years experience serving Anchorage-area residents.  ( if you have taken more than a few classes at Anchorage Yoga chances are you have practiced with Ginny!) “That’s why I will be sharing a real blueprint for health and fitness success at the upcoming, October 12 event,  You CAN Make 2010 Your Healthiest and Best Year Ever.  Because it’s not too late to make good on those resolutions and achieve all of the health, fitness and lifestyle goals you set for yourself  9 months ago.  Awareness of the following common mistakes can prevent frustration, disappointment, and ultimately another year failure when starting a new health, fitness or lifestyle program.”

For additional health, fitness and lifestyle guidance, all Anchorage-area residents are invited to attend the October 12 special event, “You CAN Make 2010 Your Healthiest and Best Year Ever!”  This event is sponsored by five of Anchorage’s leading health, fitness and lifestyle experts and is designed to share their specific knowledge and proven life-enhancing action plans with Anchorage-area residents, while raising money for Bean’s Café.  A $10 tax-deductible donation to [charity] is the only cost to attend.  Information on this event is available at  www.YourBestYearAK.com

Yoga like Beckham?

So most of us have heard Rick mention how locust pose helped John McEnroe's extend his tennis career. Does anyone under 30 even know who Johnny Mac is? More important is why would this matter to an Alaskan? When is the last time you played tennis? Oh, but now we have the real deal, a serious test of the Bikam lineage! Can a football hunk play, and play well into his forties? I have to admit I'm skeptical. Of course Bikram is my thing don't get me wrong, but soccer is a young guys game, right?
